The Starbucks Coffee Cup
First, lets start with a few basics. Starbucks coffee cup is offered in about 5 sizes.
- Short about 8 US fl oz (240 mL) smallest of the two original sizes.
- Tall about 12 US fl oz (350 mL) largest of the two original sizes.
- Grande about 16 US fl oz (470 mL) Italian/Spanish for large.
- Vente about 20 US fl oz (590 mL) Italian for twenty
- Trenta about 31 US fl oz (920 mL) Italian for thirty
Say you want the smallest size that Starbucks offers, chances are you will get what you ask if asked by the proper name. Keep in mind anyone who ask for a small will get a tall, which is the smallest size. Are you still with me? Good.
Only Starbucks hot drinks can be served in the Short sizes. The Tall 12 oz, is what you get if you ask for a small drink. Now the Grande, the 16 oz size, this will be your medium size. The proper pronunciation is GRAWN-DAY. Now the Vente 20 oz serves hot drinks or 24 oz cold. The Vente espresso drinks have that extra shot of espresso in four more ounces. Its for this reason, Vente espresso drinks costs a few cents More Than their hot drinks equivalents. Oh by the way its pronounced VENN-TEE, it means twenty in Italian.
And last but not least is the Trenta. The Trenta is Starbucks Coffee newest cup size. It is available only for iced beverages, such as iced teas, iced tea lemonades, and iced coffees.
The Trenta is about 7 ounces larger than Starbucks Vente cup for iced drinks. Many will tell you that currently it is the largest size offered. Keep in mind that the Trenta costs roughly 50 cents more than the Vente sized iced drinks according to the company.
Starbucks has its own terminology that you don’t see anywhere else. For instance, have you everhear a Starbucks barista calling out your drink when its ready? “Iced tall nonfat vanilla latte!”
There is definitely a method to order your drink to minimize mistakes. Have you ever noticed the side of your Starbucks Coffee Cup? The area with boxes that read from top to bottom “Decaf”, “Shots”"Syrup”, “Milk”, “Custom” and “Drink.”
Those boxes are sort of recipe for baristas and they serve as an ordering guide for you. The baristas consider each module in order. So if you order your drink according to this guide your drink will be done right!
Lets do this together. For instance, if you are ordering an iced drink, the first word of your order should be iced. Your next word should tell the barista the size you want.
Here is another big confusion for you. If you want a small, you will have to order a tall, medium will be grandé, large will be venti and extra large will be trenta. So as soon as the baristas hear that they will immediately grab a clear cup for iced drink and the size you want.
So far we have an iced tall! We are doing good. Now its time to convey your drink. An example for a complicated drink order correctly would be like this: “iced, double (two shots of espresso), tall (small), nonfat (milk), one sugar, mocha (flavor syrup)”.
It will be confusing for the first couple of time, but as you become a regular you will know your cups…..well let me re phrase that, as you become a regular your barista will know your cup and will call it up to you as he sees you come in!
Then you can say: “You now know your Starbucks Coffee Cup!”
Oh by the way Starbuck right spelling is with an “s” at the end!
