Cookbooks?Looking for suggestions

I am looking for some good, staple cookbooks for my collection, any suggestions? What is the #1 selling cookbook of all time?
I already have joy of cooking ,the sliver spoon, and better homes and gardens cook book. thanks you

“The New Best Recipe” from Cooks Illustrated magazine is utterly awesome (though you may develop a nasty addiction to buying their other books). If you like it a little less technical, they also offer “The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook”, which is just the recipes without all the backstory.

“Mastering the Art of French Cooking” is possibly one of the greatest cookbooks ever written in the English language — it made Julia Child a goddess of the kitchen and still remains one of the great books on techniques and general French-style food. The vegetable chapters in the first volume are especially impressive, and her later solo work “The Way To Cook” is pretty good as well.

“Cookwise” by Shirley Corriher is one of the best books on kitchen science I’ve seen — somewhere between Harold McGee and Alton Brown.

For a good baking book, try the “King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion”. Lots of good stuff in there, and one of the least “corporate” brand-name cookbooks I’ve seen.

As for general books, a lot of people like Mark Bittman’s “How To Cook Everything” series along with Joy, Betty, BH&G, and ATK. The new vegetarian volume looks to be good for people who want to learn more veg cooking without the rabbit-foodiness of Moosewood or the nutritional woo of Laurel’s Kitchen.
